    Caroline Shaw GS, who is studying composition in the University’s Department of Music, has won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Music. The award, which was announced Monday afternoon, recognizes her composition “Partita for 8 Voices,” — a piece that University Director of Graduate Studies in Composition, Daniel Trueman called “striking and unusual.”

    What music says to others is a large portion of its identity. This is why I listen to several different genres. Though instrumentals and texture are extremely important parts of music, I find that lyrics are typically the tipping point of a song. And I suppose this is why I find myself more and more disappointed with the direction of rap.
