    The ban on freshman involvement in Greek life, which will take effect on Sept. 1, will not allow upperclassmen to solicit freshmen to join fraternities or sororities electronically, President Shirley Tilghman clarified in an announcement Tuesday morning.

    The University announced that Tilghman had approved the recommendations of the Committee on Freshman Rush Policy, which was tasked by Tilghman with determining the specifics of the ban. The Committee released its report outlining its recommendations on March 25.

    In March 2010, President Shirley Tilghman gave a lecture at the University called “The Meaning of Race in the Post-Genome Era.” A dinner conversation she had with history and Wilson School professor Keith Wailoo right before the lecture revealed that the two shared similar interests about the interplay of modern genetics and the public sphere.

    Next semester, the two will co-teach WWS 354: Modern Genetics and Public Policy, a Monday evening seminar that will explore topics ranging from eugenics to FDA regulations, according to the course description.

    University President Shirley Tilghman may hold her corner office in Nassau Hall even longer than she planned. Tilghman told The Daily Princetonian in 2009 that she had informed the University’s Board of Trustees that she planned to retire from the presidency in June 2013 following the expected completion of the five-year $1.75 billion Aspire capital campaign this June. On Monday, though, Tilghman told the ‘Prince’ that she has no plans to leave office next year.

    “At the time, I thought that was a realistic plan. Nothing was set in stone,” she said. “I certainly think that there are many projects that I would like to see completed.”

    The group charged with determining how to implement the University’s policy banning freshman rush will not issue its recommendations until after midterms, according to committee chair and Dean of Undergraduate Students Kathleen Deignan.
