The appeal of U.S. citizen Xiyue Wang GS of a conviction and 10-year prison sentence for espionage was denied by Iranian authorities yesterday.

Thirty-seven-year-old Xiyue Wang GS was sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage in an Iranian court on Sunday. Wang is a fourth-year graduate student and researcher at the University working on a doctorate in history, Vice President of Communications Daniel Day said in a statement to the 'Prince.'

On May 17, the Justice Department appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller III ’66 to serve as a special counsel to oversee an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, including “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump” and “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”

President Trump signed an executive order on May 4 intended to weaken the Johnson Amendment, a provision in the 1954 Internal Revenue Code that is designed to prohibit nonprofit or 501(c)3 organizations from endorsing a political candidate. Named for former President and then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, the provision concerns organizations such as churches, charitable foundations, and universities.

In March, when Winter Storm Stella was scheduled to disrupt the University community in the midst of midterms, the University had to shift into emergency gear. Closed to non-essential personnel, the University hunkered down for what turned out to be a milder storm than anticipated. Nonetheless, the preparations had been made.

In a press release Tuesday, the University announced that it will rename West College and the major auditorium in Robertson Hall of the Wilson School in honor of University Professor Emerita Toni Morrison and Nobel Laureate and former University Professor Sir Arthur Lewis, respectively. The new names will take effect on July 1, 2017.

Westminster Choir College, whose parent school is Rider University, will be sold to a buyer in order to keep the college open and on its campus in Princeton, Rider announced today. Westminster community members protested a potential move to Rider’s Lawrenceville campus rather than being sold to another University on Tuesday morning at a committee meeting where the decision was made.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in New Jersey on March 9, a former University graduate student, identified only as John Doe in the case, alleged that the University did not take his case of sexual assault and attempted suicide seriously enough. The University responded that the lawsuit contains inaccurate representations of how the University handled the student’s case.
