In March 2020, amid nationwide shut-downs and the rapidly spreading COVID-19 pandemic, the University updated Blackboard, then the primary academic platform, with information about how to log into Zoom, a new video conferencing platform. The University announced that classes would be conducted remotely for the duration of the spring semester, as students dispersed across the world.

On Feb. 15, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation named 125 early-career researchers as recipients of the annual Sloan Research Fellowship. The 2023 Sloan Research Fellows include six of the University’s professors: Shane Campbell-Staton, Felix Heide, John Jimah, Anirudha Majumdar, Mikkel Plagborg-Møller, and Sanfeng Wu.

At the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) meeting on Feb. 26, USG President Stephen Daniels ’24 said that the budget has become more and more of a “sticking point” in terms of USG’s ability to run programming and impact student life. To close the gap, Daniels proposed raising student fees, with USG Treasurer Walker Penfield ’25 also in support.

Austin Davis ’23 and Ella Gantman ’23 were both awarded the 2023 Pyne Prize, the highest general distinction given to undergraduates. Both will be presented with the award at Alumni Day on Feb. 25.

Witherspoon Street, which runs perpendicular to Nassau Street across from FitzRandolph gate, has been under construction for more than a year. The Witherspoon Street Improvement Project is meant to make the road more accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists. In an interview with The Daily Princetonian, Assistant Municipal Engineer Jim Purcell described a series of upcoming projects along the entire length of the street, which runs through the heart of Princeton.
