Dear Sexpert,
“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster”: the opening line of Goodfellas is Martin Scorsese’s “Call me Ishmael.” Now, for the director and the rest of Hollywood, the con artist seems to be the new gangster. Like the mafia boss, the corrupt businessman has become an instant symbol of a lifestyle of wealth, power, and depravity (Patrick Bateman, anyone?). In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the themes of greed and corruption resonate onscreen, especially in three of the best films of last year: David O. Russell’s American Hustle, Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, all set against the backdrop of white-collar crime. The swindlers in these films are based on, or are a thinly veiled interpretation of, real con artists: Melvin Weinberg in American Hustle, Jordan Belfort in Wolf, and Bernie Madoff in Blue Jasmine.

It is a timeless classic of betrayal, of how one man’s noble dream deteriorated into a decaying corpse. It is a tale of loves lost and the fruitlessness of living in the past. It is Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” adapted for the stage by Robert N. Sandberg ’70, a Princeton lecturer. Kanoa Mulling ’15 directs this play, which portrays the stark, chilling realities that confront the scientist Victor Frankenstein as he struggles to ameliorate the devastation wrought by his creation.

On the day of the Orange and Black Ball, I woke up at three in the afternoon. Having missed all of my morning classes, I naturally decided there was no point in doing anything productive for the rest of the day. I spent that afternoon on YouTube and Facebook, taking breaks only to change clothes and eat. But that night, when I checked out my jacket and tie in the mirror, I immediately felt empowered. My state of mind was similar to the euphoria after nailing a test or a particularly good work-out. Of course, this euphoria abruptly ended when I spilled lemonade all over myself at the OBB.
Although the Food Gallery at Frist Campus Center stays open late on Thursdays and Saturdays, selling the infamous pizza that has become a part of going out for so many students at the University, usually when we think of food in Princeton — a town filled with expensive restaurants and small specialty shops — pizza doesn’t come to mind.
