Opinion Section Application Center

The Daily Princetonian's Opinion section publishes five days a week and features columns written by guest and staff columnists, unsigned editorials debated and penned by an editorial board, and a daily cartoon drawn by a staff cartoonist. It also occasionally publishes letters to the editor and point-counterpoints.

At least one Opinion editor is in the office at 48 University Place on Sunday through Thursday nights from 5:30pm until after midnight. If you want to ask us anything in person or meet us, feel free to stop by. You can also e-mail opinion@dailyprincetonian.com with any questions.

We are now taking applications for all positions. Below, you'll find information and instructions on how to apply. Due dates are listed on each application.

EDITORIALS

Being a member of the editorial board

The Editorial Board is responsible for determining the position of the 'Prince' on matters affecting the Princeton campus. In the past year, the Board has written about issues ranging from gender-neutral housing to the Honor Code to pornography and the USG..

The editorial board meets two times weekly - on Sunday and Tuesday nights - for about an hour each night to discuss and vote on editorials. Board members are expected to conduct research on potential editorial topics prior to meetings and work closely with counterparts in the News department to keep abreast of developing stories.

Additionally, board members take turns writing the editorials. Each member writes, on average, once every three weeks, and comes in to the newsroom to edit with the chair of the editorial board. The board deliberates behind closed doors, determines its positions independently and answers only to the Executive Editor for Opinion and the Editor-in-Chief. Editorial positions are determined by majority vote. Under certain circumstances, a unified minority may publish a dissenting opinion.

Application process

The Editorial Board is currently accepting applications. All interested students are invited to apply. Applicants submit an application and also participate in a short interview. The application asks for a list of activities on campus, a short essay on why you wish to join the board and a sample editorial about a campus issue of your choosing.

Please return completed applications electronically to opinion@dailyprincetonian.com by the deadline listed in the application.

COLUMNS

Being a columnist

Columnists write one 725-800 word column once every two weeks on a topic of their choosing. We strongly believe that the most important function of the Opinion section is to provide incisive and artful commentary, and that this is usually best done by students discussing matters directly related to their experience. But this is not meant to imply a narrow focus: our columnists are given broad autonomy to choose their topics and angles, and are never asked to take a specific stance or be explicitly controversial or non-confrontational. We're interested in what they have to say, not us.

Columns are due in completed form two days before publication at dinner time. That evening, columnists come in to the office to edit collaboratively with an Opinion editor. If major changes are needed, the final draft is due the following day at dinner time.

CARTOONS

Being a cartoonist

Cartoonists draw on average once every week and a half and have a broad range of artistic styles and senses of humor. We are looking for people who can draw and people who can plan cartoons. If you can only do one or the either, you can still apply! We'll try to find someone to pair you with. Please complete a full application.
