The leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping, and the air is starting to smell of pumpkin and firewood. Fall is here and it’s time to start dressing like it. For some, the transition into fall can be a tad dreary. No longer can you stroll outside in a sundress and sandals, or take a leisurely swim in the pool after a long day. But instead of fixating on the end of summer’s sweetness, try thinking of all the fun fall possibilities for your closet.

The key to a killer fall or winter ensemble is always jaw-dropping outerwear. A good coat or jacket will elevate your look instantly, and can last you years. So, how will you stay looking fabulous this fall, you ask? Let’s go to the runways.

Clean-Cut Classic:Seen at Costume National Fall2013, Celine Fall 2013, & 10 Crosby Derek Lam Fall 2013

If you’re looking for something simple with clean lines and a classic vibe, this is the style for you. This overcoat will complement any ensemble you put together, and is sure to keep you warm. The style features a longer vertical length and often times a broader shoulder, giving it an oversized menswear feel.

Feminine Touch:Seen at Zac Posen Fall 2013, Chloé Fall 2013, & Honor Fall 2013

Love a little feminine flare? Me too. These coats will keep you feeling elegant all winter long. These silhouettes are timeless and extremely versatile. Try an equestrian boot with a more tailored style, or a bootie with something with a slouchy vibe.

Fur Chic:Seen at Belstaff Fall 2013, Peter Som Fall 2013, & Lanvin Fall 2013

For those who adore soft-textured coats, fur is a fabulous option. Whether you’re down to rock full-on fur or fur accents, you’ll be able to take on whatever winter throws your way. If you’re looking for something a little less loud, try a thin fur vest over a sweater for the same ravishing effect. If you really want to stand out, try a fur that’s been dyed à la Lanvin Fall 13.

Modern Sport:Seen at Fendi Fall 2013, DKNY Fall 2013, & Rag & Bone Fall 2013

The runways were dripping with sporty influence this season. Designers were inspired by varsity jackets and their clean, round silhouettes. This look is perfect for those who don’t want the added weight of a longer coat, but still want to stay warm and fabulous. The simplicity of a sporty piece will also give you the freedom to play with more complex layering pattern play.

Whatever you choose to sport during the chilly fall and winter months, don’t be afraid to try something outside of your sartorial comfort zone. You’d be surprised what can be mixed, matched, and worn as neutral or basic. Happy outerwear hunting!
