Women’s swimming and diving struggles against rivals Harvard and Yale

Last Saturday in their last regular-season meet of the season, the women’s swimming and diving team suffered big losses against both the Bulldogs and the Crimson.

The hosts Yale (7-0) took the tri-meet as they triumphed 230-70 over Princeton (4-3) and visitors Harvard 223.5-76.5. The Tigers also lost the battle for second place, facing a 113-187 defeat against the Crimson (6-1).

Even from the start of the meet, the Bulldogs put on exemplary form, taking first place in the first eight events of the weekend. Amidst the challenges, however, the Tigers still fought fiercely for the win. Freshman Gianna Garcia finished third place in the 100-backstroke in 56.09, while Sophomore Kate Didion finished second soon after in the 100-breaststroke. Sophomore Joanna Curry also took third in the 200-butterfly in 2:01.54.

Similar stories emerged throughout the second half of the competition, as Yale and Harvard dominated the charts in most of the events. Didion secured another second-place finish in the 200-breast with a time of 2:17.90, but the Tigers could not take home any first-place finishes from New Haven this year. In the last event of the weekend, The team of sophomore Isabel Reis, freshman Meghan Slattery, junior Madelyn Veith, and senior Katie Diller finished third in the 400-free, wrapping up the meet to an end.

Despite finishing 4-3 in the regular season, the Tigers still have a chance to win the title later this month at the Ivy League Championships in Providence, R.I. Even amidst last weekend’s heavy defeat, having displayed outstanding individual and group performances in earlier meets this season, Head Coach Susan Teeter will be hoping for a rewarding victory in what will be the last Ivy League Championships of her swimming and coaching career.

The Tigers will take on their Ancient Eight rivals at Brown University on Feb. 16th and the following weekend in their last meet of the 2016-2017 Ivy League season.
