“We had a fairly comfortable life in Nigeria, but they told me we moved to America for the opportunities, like the educational opportunities,” he said in an interview with CNN.

He wrote his college admissions essay on the challenges he faced while adjusting to life in America, including difficulties in his U.S. history class.

Ekeh is planning on majoring in neurobiology or chemistry in college in hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon. Earlier this year he was named 2015 Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist for his research on acid DHA and its effects on Alzheimer’s disease progression.

Outside of high school academics, he directs a youth choir, plays the drums and participates in Key Club and Model United Nations.
