Counseling and Psychological Services looking for clinical services associate, psychiatric nurse

Counseling and Psychological Services will be hiring a clinical services associate and a psychiatric nurse, according to job postings on the University’s website. Though the search for the psychiatric nurse has closed, the clinical services associate position remains unfilled.

The associate, who will report to the associate director of CPS, will, among other duties, serve as a liaison between psychiatric hospitals and CPS to “exchange clinical information about students,” according to the job posting. The associate will also be the first point of contact for students and other University Health Services departments and deans who wish to refer students to CPS, and will provide administrative support to all CPS clinics and schedule appointments.

University spokesperson Martin Mbugua noted that even though the associate will be the first point of contact for deans, this exchange will not involve providing any clinical information to deans. Rather, it would entail “normal business operations,” including referrals of students by the dean followed by scheduling those students with appointments at CPS, Mbugua said.

Mbugua added that counselors would only exchange information with deans if they had the student’s signed consent; no confidential information would be exchanged between departments.

“It would be communication of the offices that are providing a service, not confidential matters,” Mbugua said.

CPS regularly communicates with hospitals, since students who are discharged typically return to McCosh Health Center to be evaluated by CPS clinicians. Students are also often required to undergo follow-up treatment plans required by the deans. The associate would communicate with hospitals and exchange information for that reason, Mbugua said. In addition, students usually have follow-up treatment plans as required by deans.

Hospitals would also be able to refer students back to CPS, and vice versa, according to Mbugua.

The clinical services associate is not a new position, Mbugua said, but modifies the duties of a previously existing position.

The position calls for a master's degree in social work or equivalent, and requires that the employee be eligible for a counseling license in New Jersey.

Several CPS administrators are currently named in alawsuitfiled by a student against the University alleging discrimination on the basis of mental health. Among the student’s complaints are the allegations that his confidential CPS records were unduly shared by CPS administrators with University administrators, including an instance of former CPS Director Anita McLean allegedly reading from a confidential medical report in a meeting with several deans.

Director of CPS Calvin Chin deferred comment to Mbugua.
