News & Notes: Teachers' union fails to make headway with Board of Education in contract talks

The town's Board of Education and the teachers' union failed to make any progress in contract negotiations last week, ending the latest round of negotiations in less than an hour, The Princeton Packet reported.

The two sides are still operating under the contract that expired in June, and are currently working to negotiate a new three-year contract. They will meet for another round of negotiations on Oct. 22.

The two sides have been arguing about the same issues during the negotiations: salaries and benefits. The school district is offering raises of slightly under 2 percent for each year of the three-year contract, but the union claims the school has said that teachers would need to accept fewer health benefits in order to cover the cost of any raise above 1.8 percent.

The Board of Education claims that the demands of the union would lead to layoffs and larger class sizes, adding that the union's proposal exceeds the maximum tax raise allowed by state law.

A state-appointed mediator will meet with the two sides on Nov. 20 in an effort to break the stalemate between the union and the board.
