News & Notes: Dartmouth newspaper advocates abolishing the Greek system

The Editorial Board of “The Dartmouth” published an article on Oct. 17urging its administration and president to abolish the Greek system.

“Abolishing Greek life, though not a be-all, end-all solution, would offer Dartmouth a chance to rebuild its social life from the ground up,” the editorial said.

The Editorial Board called upon the Dartmouth Board of Trustees to abolish the fraternity and sorority system that "enables and institutionalizes harmful behaviors.”

At Dartmouth, around 50 percent of the student body is affiliated with the Greek system.

In spring 2014, a Presidential Steering Committee was established to tackle high-risk and harmful behavior. The committee, made up of faculty, alumni and students, was tasked to address sexual assault, high-risk drinking and a lack of inclusion.

Dartmouth experienced a 14 percent drop in applications for the Class of 2018.

An increasing number of schools are seeking to abolish Greek systems in light of recent deaths due to hazing and Greek social activities. Clemson University suspended fraternity activities earlier this month following the death of student Tucker Hipps in September.
