News and Notes: Harvard professors disappointed by Princeton grade deflation repeal

Several Harvard professors have expressed disappointment over Princeton’s recent decision to rescind its 10-year-old grade deflation policy, according to The Harvard Crimson.

The policy change may discourage Harvard and other fellow institutions from pursuing similar grading policies to combat grade inflation, Harvard professor Harvey C. Mansfield said.

Harvard professor Daniel L. Smail said that he recognized the problems associated with grading policies, but hoped that Princeton’s example would have seen success in light of Harvard’s own grade inflation issue.

Last December, Harvard Dean of Undergraduate Education Jay M. Harris announced that the median grade the university’s undergraduate students received was an A-.

Harvard professor Jeffrey A. Miron said that while he was also disappointed by the vote, he agreed that maintaining the policy could have hurt Princeton.Admitted students might favor other schools over Princeton out of concern for their grades, so unless other peer institutions also adopted similar policies, grade deflation could have a long-term negative impact for Princeton, Miron said.
