News & Notes: Columbia Daily Spectator drops daily print edition

The Columbia Daily Spectator, the student-run newspaper at Columbia University, will discontinue its daily publication and switch to a weekly print edition beginning in the fall, Editor-in-Chief Abby Abrams announced on Wednesday.

The Spectator is the first Ivy League newspaper to drop daily publication. Itwill continue to publish content on a daily basis on its website but will limit its print publication to Thursdays.

The decision was motivated by the Spectator’s desire to improve the quality of its work, Abrams told Capital New York. She added that the decision was not forced upon the editorial staff, but rather a choice that it agreed upon.

The funding available from discontinuing its daily print edition will be used by the Spectator to expand the work-study program that will enable the editorial staff to receive an hourly wage. The Spectator’s board of trustees is expected to give the final approval on Friday.
