News & Notes: Obama ’85 recalls teachers warning her she set her college sights too high

First Lady Michelle Obama ’85 recalled being told by her teachers at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School that she was “setting [her] sights too high” by applying to Princeton and other top colleges at a talk with students at Bell Multicultural High School on Tuesday.

She explained that the experience taught her that “nobody was going to take my hand and lead me to where I was going to go,”as reported by DNAinfo Chicago.Throughout the talk, Obama spoke about her teenage years on the South Side of Chicago and her parents, who always encouraged her to do her best in school. She said that the negativity she faced from others actually fueled her desire to succeed.

“When I encountered doubters, when people told me I wasn't going to cut it, I didn't let that stop me— in fact, I did the opposite,” she said. “And at the end, I got into Princeton, and that was one of the proudest days of my entire life,” Obama said.

As her husband rose to national prominence, University officials made at least six direct overtures to Obama to return to Princeton or speak at Princeton-affiliated events. An investigation by The Daily Princetonian found that in all but one case, Obama has rebuffed the University’s advances, often citing a busy schedule.

At another talk with Chicago high school students in July, Obama referred to her alma mater as “the iviest of the Ivies.”
