The University was an alien environment for Texas Senator (R) Ted Cruz ’92 when he first stepped on campus, according to aprofile of Cruz in the October issue of GQ.
"I did not know anybody there; I didn't know anybody who had gone there," he told the magazine. To earn tuition money, Cruz taught test prep classes at the Princeton Review.
The profile, which chronicles his "swift rise" from Princeton undergrad to "the most despised man in the U.S. Senate," also takes note of the "Princeton ring that's always on his right hand" and calls him a "distinguished wacko bird from Texas."
As a student at Harvard Law School, Cruz refused to study with classmates who had not attended Harvard, Princeton or Yale, not wanting anyone from "'minor Ivies' like Penn or Brown," as one of his law school roommates told GQ.
Cruz's last visit to the University took place during Reunions, during which he spoke about his experiences as a conservative student with professor Robert George. The senator was reportedly considering a campaign for the presidency in 2016.
