Witherspoon 417

Witherspoon Hall in Rockefeller College is home to many underclassmen, but its crowning jewels are the five turret quads that each offer a spacious common room. Street got a chance to talk with one such room's current residents, Meredith Armstrong ’15 and Jacqueline Lis ’15 about their time in the turret.

Q: What is your favorite thing about this room?

A: One of the best parts of having such a big and appealing room is the fact that all of our friends come here. Our door is always propped open, and on any given night three to seven people are here just hanging out. The view is also really beautiful; you can see all of campus. This is one of the highest points on campus in terms of dorm rooms so we can literally see everything.

Q: What is your favorite place in the room?

A: I like to sit on a rug in the middle of the room because then I can look at everyone. We also really like the turret and table because we can order food and then all sit and eat together. We feel like a family.

Q: The room is great! Is there anything you would change about it?

A: Well, the only thing is the laundry room and kitchen are in the basement. It isn’t so bad because there is an elevator but if you want to microwave something, get a microfridge for the room! There is a kitchen on the fourth floor, but it doesn’t have a microwave so I don’t know how they can even call it a kitchen.

Q: Do you guys have any advice for people going into room draw?

A: The most important thing is location; it is really nice to have your friends around you. Most of our friends in Rocky live in Witherspoon, and even though some of them took smaller singles or rooms here, they like it better because all their friends are around. I definitely think location and having friends around is the most important thing when choosing a room.

Wilcox 306

Street ventured to Wilcox Hall to talk with Liz Ostertag ’16 and Amanda Muliawan ’16 about their room, a converted yoga studio. Wilcox Hall 306 feels substantially nicer than any old quick fix to house the large Class of 2016. Two floors above Princeton’s most popular dining hall and two minutes from Frist, the double is perfect for those looking to make the best use of an unlimited meal plan. There’s room for freshmen Liz and Amanda to debunk, set up a coffee station, spread out furniture and still have space for their yoga mats if the room’s history ever inspires them to strike a few poses before bedtime.

Q: How did you react when you found out you would be living in Wilson when you got your housing assignment?

Amanda: When I first got to Princeton, I kind of snuck through the construction underneath the taped sign that said "Do Not Enter," and there was still a yoga room with this design on the wall and it had a sign that said "Please clean your borrowed mats and roll, stack and fold your props." So when we got here we made it our own. That's our little joke.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Wilcox 306?

Amanda: Liz.

Liz: My favorite thing has to be the space.

Amanda: We have our own sides of the room … We can have a single just within a double … There are times where we won’t speak for like four hours and will just be sitting on our own sides of the room.

Q: Is Wilcox all freshmen this year? How does that affect the hall’s feel?

Liz: Yes. It’s a great group of people.

Amanda: It’s like a concentrated version of a residential college because we’re so isolated.

Q: What is it like living right above the busiest dining hall on campus?

Liz: You can’t hear anything. When it’s cold outside you don’t have to walk outside and Cafe Night is great, we can just go down the elevator.

Q: How do you think you will adjust to living in a different room in Wilson? What are your expectations for the housing lottery and your assignments next year?

Liz: I think everything is going to be a downgrade from this in Wilson, but I’m excited for something different.

Amanda: I feel like next year there is no room that can beat this at all, but it’s going to be more like a normal dorm experience.

Q: What is your advice to those who are assigned to this room next year?

Liz: Be creative. I would say I don’t know, I’m jealous.
