Student shipping agency in Frist closes its door
The Shipping and Packing Agency in Frist Campus Center has been closed permanently due to a lack of sales, according to Aaron Hoffman, assistant to the director of Student Agencies in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students.
The agency was located in a small closet-sized room in Frist, across from Cafe Vivian. Now, the door to the room is closed, with a note that reads, “The Shipping and Packing Agency has closed permanently. We would like to thank everyone for their business.”
Hoffman explained that because the small size of the customer base had caused the agency to fail in the first place, the loss of the agency would not affect many.
“Based on traffic and sales, we believe not too many people will be affected by this decision,” Hoffman said. “Shipping and Packing had existed for a while, only doing well infrequently due to continued competition from various convenient vendors both on and off campus.”
The location in Frist sold boxes, tape, envelopes and other shipping materials. The student agencies' website indicates that one function it used to perform — selling packing supplies during move-out period — will now be handled by Moving and Storage, its sister agency.
Recently, the agency had been experiencing significant competition from outside shipping entities like FedEx, UPS and the Postal Service. Some academics have their own independent shipping arrangements with either FedEx or UPS. Students frequently either arrange for pickups through FedEx and UPS online or use the Post Office located in Palmer Square.
“The closing is unfortunate since this was an entrepreneurial type program that we were able to offer students,” said Hoffman, noting that the student managers had pursued many initiatives, such as gift wrapping, in an effort to increase the agency's visibility and improve its finances.
According to Hoffman, the Shipping and Packing Agency had a large inventory of boxes and other equipment that will now be managed by the Moving and Storage agency. Princeton Student Agencies will release further details on how students can purchase this equipment during the spring semester as move out approaches.
Hoffman said he did not know the status of the Shipping and Packing Agency's space in Frist.
