News & Notes: Felten says Facebook copyright meme is “not entirely silly”
According to Ed Felten, a renowned expert on computer security and a Wilson School and computer science professor, the copyright meme circulating on Facebook walls which has been discredited by many commentators is “not entirely silly.”
In a post on a blog hosted by the University’s Center for Information Technology Policy, which Felten directs, Felten argued that the text being posted to Facebook walls does constitute an enforceable agreement between the social media site and the individual. The post attempts to apply a copyright to all personal details posted on Facebook.
“Now, I’m not claiming that this kind of copyright statement does change the user’s rights. All I’m saying is that it’s not ridiculous for a user to think it might,” he said.
