News & Notes: Class of 2016 elect five for freshman council

The Class of 2016 elected Justin Ziegler, Molly Stoneman, Gwen Lee, Priya Krishnan and Fiz Dhanani to form the inaugural freshman class council. Following a USG referendum last semester, the freshman class now elects a class government of equals rather than a government dictated by a hierarchical system led by a class president.

Ziegler earned 249 votes, Stoneman 217, Lee 191, Krishnan 176 and Dhanani 164. Thirty-one total candidates ran for class government.

Earlier this month, the administrator of the Class of 2016 Facebook page attempted to auction the cover photo to interested candidates. No candidate attempted to purchase the space, and the USG repudiated the auction.

In April, 76.7 percent of voters supported a referendum that eliminated freshman officer positions.
