Firestone Library was evacuated at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday after a faulty sensor caused a fire alarm to ring in an elevator shaft.

Although there was no fire, University protocol requires that all occupants of the building remain outside until the cause of the alarm is determined, according to University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua.

Occupants of the building remained outside for approximately 30 minutes.

The alarm sounded when a contractor renovating the library mistakenly cut a conduit with cables that connected to the alarm system, according to a press release.

All parts of the library except the Trustee Reading Room and the Reserve Desk were closed for the night while workers attempted to repair the system.
