A smart guy with the extreme conservative credentials he polished at Princeton. Princeton in the nation's service in making higher education ever more corporate, in the spirit of Harold Shapiro and Ruth Simmons.
How is he qualified, exactly?

1. Daniels is Regan budget czar.
2. Lugar pays off Daniels by giving this out of stater who has no connection with Indiana the Indiana governorship.
3. Daniels has state Republicans pass law that says governor appoints Purdue trustees.
4. Governor appoints ALL Purdue trustees.
5. State Republicans, feeling their right-wing oats, has Daniels apply for Purdue position as old president is force retired and it looks like Daniels has no where else to go.
6. Trustees elect Daniels over real candidates.
7. Trustees will throw out forced retire age of Purdue president for Daniels.
8. Daniels salary will go up five times as Purdue president.
Historically, there is no love lost between right-wing Daniels and liberal Purdue. Creationism, global warming, scientific research, anti-unionism, public employee pay cuts, making Purdue a cheap diploma mill are just some of the Republican practices Daniels will be dragging into Purdue.
I don't think it is too far-fetched to expect professor firings and student expulsions for not toeing the Republican line under a Daniels administration.
