Sadly, the 2012 Trials are essentially US Swimmings' exploitation of the competitors. In order to fill the 16,000 seats in Omaha, USS lowered the time standards, so more swimmers would meet the minimum qualifying times and be able to attend. Compare this to the NCAAs where rigid time standards mean that most who qualify, have a reasonable expectation of actually finishing in the Top 16.
Why is this important? Well, someone has to pay for all the athletes to travel to the meet, and in all likelihood, they will also be accompanied by parents, friends, etc. Several thousand bucks each.
Shame on US Swmming.
Yes, but you focus only on the downsides.
Think about all the upsides, as well mentioned in the article, that competing in Trials affords. I would think that parents would gladly pay for a ticket to watch their kid swim at Trials.
