One can be an advocate (as I am) of anti-war and anti-greed (and anti-government criminality) without being a devotee of Cornell West.....My personal exposure to West convinced me that here was a very sharp guy who learned how to act like a scholar, developed a great vocabulary and facility with words, who could put a 100 superfluous footnotes in every article, who was a wordsmith par excellence with a gift for the spin, but who, at bottom, was scarcely more than a street radical in disguise.....Let the man toot his horn as he pleases, make the headlines, get arrested.....But don't fall for all the hoopla.....Like Sharpton, West is a showman, just with more brains......

My good co-commenter tv8 has learned the language of academia, understands the value of a sharp comment, and can write a run on sentence like no one else...but don't let his cogitations distract you from this one fact. Underneath all his verbosity lies nothing more than a good old fashioned racist redneck in disguise... "scarcely more than a street radical" indeed, good day to you sir!

No, truepatriot, racism is not being 'allowed' to criticize someone because he is black.

    bravo

Bravo to Dr. West for stepping into the fray. Say what you want about what you think about his relative 'faculties' or 'scholarly worth.' Dr. West is trying to do his utmost. That's plenty for me.

P.S. It's funny that haters never mention the mostly mediocre academics who comprise academia. They criticize Dr. West by comparing him to an ideal of some sort of superman humanist, making rigorous and valuable contributions, when such professors don't often exist.

tv8, if you are truly anti-war and anti-government criminality -as you claim- how can you so ignorantly try to delegitimize Cornell West's arrest by calling him a "showman". Watch the video ( ). Professor West is a hero to people of all races, nationalities, and generations because he is taking a stance, and putting himself on the line by peacefully advocating for what he correctly sees as being morally just. If the people involved in Wall Street/The U.S. Military Complex/The Health Care Industry had this kind of commitment to truth and social justice - if they realized that there is a limit to what can justify a profit (which are many times exorbitant and unnecessary since these entities already have so much money) -then the Occupy Wallstreet movement would have never happened in the first place. If you are as active as Cornell West in terms of real, hands-on advocacy, then you can certainly comment on his style. However, if you are just going to sit behind a computer screen and criticize someone else's hard-earned suffering, then please consult the dictionary definition for 'hypocrite'...as well as 'inert'. People like Cornell West need to exist precisely because of people like us: well-intentioned, informed individuals who are too bogged down by the duties and pressures of daily life to emulate his courage. We NEED people like Cornell West (even if his writing style is a bit superfluous, I agree) and therefore we should be doing everything we can to SUPPORT him, not find faults in things that are completely irrelevant to the pursuit of truth and NECESSARY CHANGE. How else will we ever succeed in promulgating reform? Cornell West, if you ever read this, I want you to know that I'm SUPER proud, as a Princetonian, to see you actively advocating for these causes. I love your preacher-style voice, your verbose diction, your elegant suits, iconic afro, love of blues music, and your consistency of character. Thank you so much for being an exemplary HUMAN BEING! All the best, <3.

His Twitter says that he will be held in prison overnight and that he will be required to appear in court at 1pm on Monday to answer to trespassing charges.

@tv8 - Could not agree more. The guy is a charlatan and a gigantic attention-seeker, and anybody who fails to see that is just blinded by his pretty words.
