One night during the fall of his freshman year, John Burford ’12 found himself at the Show & Tel strip club on the south side of Philadelphia with six other Princeton freshmen. All seven were pledge brothers in Princeton’s chapter ...(back to the article)

Why'd you have to go and do this, Prince? Now this comment board's going to be filled by angry superior self-righteous comments by parents, alums, nerdy students, people affiliated with rival schools, etc.
major props to Burford

looks fairly straightforward. they didn't misquote me or anything, which is what i was afraid would happen. they left a few things out, like what specific illegal things we were made to do (vandalize public property, steal, solicit hookers, mostly relatively minor stuff like that), but i don't blame them for that.
the most epic story the prince left out. The pledge educator the year before me used to get completely coked out, make the pledges lie on their stomachs, and would pee on them while screaming at them. Classy.
for any greeks, current or former, who are going to bitch at me for letting the cat out of the bag, the main thing i was going for here wasn't to get anybody in trouble (i specifically asked the prince not to name any names, which it looks like they held to), but just to work towards having more university oversight for this sort of thing. i'm from the south, where greek life is huge, and there are tons of schools there where the presence of a pan-hellenic council lets greeks get all of the good and none of the bad. surprisingly, currently the hazing at a "geek school" like princeton is a lot worse than it is for my friends at LSU or Ole Miss, for instance, just because bad stuff has gone down there in the past and the administration there has had to get their act together and start seriously policing this kind of thing.
so i hope the princeton administration gets off its moral high horse and decides that issues that seriously threaten the health of 17% of its student body, and especially the male portion, are more important than their bullshit ivory tower ideals. if something does happen before they get their act together, at least they won't be able to say they had no idea this sort of thing was going on. here's hoping.
You're from the south huh? You couldn't be more wrong about things you did being worse than what they do in the south. Pan hellenic councils do nothing, they just force those fraternities caught to be even more clandestine in their actions. No way in hell anything you were forced to do came close to what people at Ole Miss do so quit crying.
Is anyone confused as to why the specific mention of a "black" stripper makes it hazing? Does the stripper being black make it into hazing?
H01y $h1t.
Recognizing fraternities won't result in them behaving. It will just mean that they'll be able to have EXPENSIVE "clean" university sponsored events on the books, and then do their same junk off of the books.
The University should simply continue to strive to delegitimize them. If they become recognized by the University, the University becomes responsible for what happens to their members; I think such a liability would be INSANE for the University to assume.
i do agree, props to the kid for putting his name forward. i also don't agree with having the university legitimize such bs behavior. there should be no university backed money going into this sort of crap.
Mr Bruford, I aprreciate your sentiment and if we were talking about the fifth grade social circles on my elementary school yard, I would agree with your call for the administration to intervene. But my dear fraternity-drop-out, this isn't recess--we are adults. It's your own damn fault for pledging a frat that you knew had that reputation. Besides, hazing is a psychological game on plays with his fraternity. You never HAVE to do anything, you simply make the conscious decision for yorself that the brotherhood is more important than your momentary discomfort. However, if this no longer is the case, drop it. We are all adults here; don't pledge a fraternity unless you know your limits. I love my fraternity but there are definitely lines I would not have crossed, and I knew that I ultimately did not want to be brothers with individuals who would "force" me to cross that line. Take some self-initiative and stop whining for Shirley to come hold your hand.
