When asked about the men’s swimming team’s impressive 20-year undefeated streak in dual meets at DeNunzio Pool, head coach Rob Orr simply said, “Is that how long it is? That’s what people have told me.”

Orr’s ...

    C. Rob Orr, the creator of Blast-Mo-Jazz, has done a remarkable job with the talent provided him by the Admissions Office. It is also a tribute to his coaching that so many athletes who aren't among the first tier nonetheless continue their swimming careers under his guidance, sacrificing a "normal" Princeton career for the experience of Princeton Swimming. Kudos.

But what is this "home-field advantage" the Prince refers to? Pool, yes; field, no!

    C. Rob Orr leading by pessimism.

Orr said he fears that this streak may not last much longer, explaining that “as it gets much harder to recruit student athletes, I think that we will definitely see a loss before I retire.”

That is just the way he is. He is very conservative in the sense of thinking long term and planning out meet strategies. He never overestimates himself and more importantly never underestimates an opponent. I wouldn't say pessimistic as much as conservative (not in the political sense). Whatever you want to call it, it works. I graduated last year and everyone on that team would lie down in traffic for him.

Don't get me wrong. I love Rob, I just thought this was a typical Rob Orr quote about how poorly Princeton will likely do in the future and then each year he surpasses the low expectation. Trust me. Once you have been out of school for 15 years and hear Rob do this dance 15 times you will find it funny too.

It works for Rob. I don't think it would work for most coaches but he can pull it off.

Meer '02 "played a part in the streak's formation"? That's a solid piece of reporting there, Mel!

haha, I thought the same thing... how can an '02 alum have played a role in the formation of a streak that started in 1990? Classic Prince reporting.

wow, that was a clever observation spartacus- evidently there is no way that someone for '02 could have played a part in a streak that stretches from 1990-2010? Because by swimming during this time he clearly did not contribute in any way at all. Oh to be as wise as you...

When P gets to 163 or to 201 straight victories counting away meets, write another article.
