For 15 minutes on Wednesday evening, a crowd of 150 people gathered in Labyrinth Books to listen to a phone call.

Mumia Abu-Jamal, an inmate on Pennsylvania’s death row, spoke on the phone with African-American studies and religion professor ...

I realize that the penal system, indeed our entire society, is unjust to blacks and Latinos. I am, further, thrilled that this man seems to have made a turn around, and has allowed Love to enter his heart.

This said, why are cities and nations honoring him as some sort of "innocent" hero, and why is HIS case an example of racial injustice? Didn't he shoot and kill a police officer?

    Unbelievable

Johanna Fernandez, a professor at Baruch College who also spoke at the event, called the prison system “the face of racism today.” “Mumia is an innocent man on death row...because of what he stands for,” she said.

    Is this serious? MY GOD.

I do not care what the IQ of some of the people are. Saying things like this does not make one an "academic" or a "revolutionary thinker"......it makes him/her a complete waste of intellectual potential.

Wesley Cook (aka Mumia abu Jamal) is a convicted murderer who has never bothered to explain in court or outside of court what happened the night that Officer Faulkner got murdered. I realize this is student journalism but The Daily Princetonian could have at least attempted in some small measure to present both sides of the story instead of simply putting out, free of charge, yet more propaganda for Mr. Cook's PR machine. You can do better than this.

"When a police officer pulled over Abu-Jamal’s brother, Abu-Jamal allegedly shot and killed the police officer and was also wounded himself."

This is pathetic. There's absolutely nothing "alleged" about Abu-Jamal's crime -- his brutal murder of a police officer. Check your stylebook, Daily Prince -- a correction is in order. Is the author a freshman or something?

I wonder why black "intellectuals" like Cornel West make no effort to explore the reality of black crime and its causes--perhaps looking at the total dysfunction of inner-city black "families" and their communities--rather than jump on the bandwagon of someone who committed a heinous crime. I am unaware of any exculpatory evidence that makes Jamal an innocent victim. If anything, his own community victimized him in the first place.

The rest of society doesn't care about the large numbers of blacks in the penal system because the black community obviously doesn't care or it would do soemthing to improve the lives of its own.

If Cornel West really cared, he wouldn't be wasting his time with Princeton undergraduates in a rich, white, non-urban community who can do nothing to challenge his ridiculous assertions.

Raphael is right, he did not "allegedly" shoot. He was convicted in a court of law. From my view, his punishment is just, and it is a disgrace that Brother Cornel would give this MURDERER a forum like this.

Wait, so this guy shot and killed a police officer. And now he's on death row. And there's something WRONG with this?

The only injustice is to the tax payers that have to spend their hard earned money to keep this killer alive. Just execute him already.

Yes please remove the word "allegedly". Mr. Cook was convicted.

    damn Cornel West

Daniel Faulkner (the man Mumia abu Jamal KILLED) served proudly in the United States Military and the Philadelphia Police Department.

The fact that his death is being disgraced by this convicted killer is ridiculous.

    Equal Outcomes

Having blacks overrepresented in prison is clear evidence that The System is racist. Similarly, having men overrepresented in prison is clear evidence that The System is sexist.
