Survey: 56 percent oppose arming Public Safety

Written by Henry Rome, Staff Writer

The USG formally recommended Thursday that Public Safety officers remain unarmed, dealing a setback to the Fraternal Order of Police’s efforts to advocate allowing the officers to carry guns. In a USG poll, 56 percent of students said they ...(back to the article)

Nothing shocking about the results. We all know that it will take a Columbine/VT to shake the out of touch student body. There are hardened criminals on campus....as I write this. But since we are unarmed......they won't ever elevate their use of force.

Most departments have the respect of their community. This is very disappointing.

If Figures is a member of PS (as indicated by the quote "But since we are unarmed..") and if the alleged knowledege of "hardened criminals on campus" is factual, why not remove these individuals from campus?

Sorry "xyz"....I like going home to my family. Since I don't have the tools to keep myself safe in EVERY situation, I am not suited to remove any hardened criminal. I am not asking for a gun so I can flaunt it at students. Contrary to popular belief, we actually don't wake up looking for ways to screw over the student body.

Seriously, what gives people the right to deny a police officer the ability to protect themselves? We have given them the responsibility to watch over us. They are equally if not MORE trained than the local municipal cops (let alone the fact that PU cops have to deal with an entire community that questions authority). Would residents of the township and borough demand their police be unarmed?

What do people think PU cops would do if they were armed? Shoot themselves, others? Believe it or not, the cops are professionals. They work very closely with security, but make no mistake of the distinction between the two.

Studentsd are basing their answers on emotion (Carl Fields, etc...). Why doesn't the USG sit down with the police union and have a dialogue about what is really going on. Then let USG go back to the students and give a full assessment of the current climate.

Reasonable professionals are taking reasonable steps to reach a reasonable goal.

so according to Lanzi the student body is "uninformed"? yet another example of public safety's outrageously contemptuous attitude towards the people it "serves"

if they want guns, they can join the trenton PD and do some actual police work. as it is, they're glorified mall cops, and since they're always on a major power trip even without guns, I seriously doubt guns will improve their conduct. public safety is pathetic - glorified security guards.

I'll take my chances with the terrorists. "reasonable professionals" - lol

Why don't we just move straight to a post-apocalyptic vision in which everyone is heavily armed and we shoot any "suspicious" characters on sight? More seriously, when City University of New York armed its guards years ago, the most visible result was a spate of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Do you really think you are safer, if you are surrounded by people carrying loaded firearms? Also, when was the last time a Public Safety officer at Princeton was injured because he/she did not carry a firearm?

Containment, concealment, and denial are treasured assets to PU and must be dissolved if it ever wishes to truly prepare its students for reality. If you refuse to equip the sworn police with the tools they need to properly perform their duties, then you should abolish the police agency as a whole and entrust a sovereign department. Justice cannot be both subservient and assured.

You're all missing the point. Columbine, Va Tech, Ft. Hood, 3rd Reich, etc., shooting massacres take place in gun-free zones.

Anybody should be allowed to carry a firearm. Alum70's nonsense is just that. An armed citizenry is a peaceful citizenry.

The only thing that stopped the Fort Hood shooter was a police officer with a GUN. The military also wanted to not arm their soldiers because they felt they would be safer. Now, many of them are dead. And just an FYI..anyone wanting to kill a bunch of students and staff already know that your campus is unarmed. Here's a fourth grade saying for you Ivy Leaguers..Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
