So Eighties. I want high-protein classes. These are serious times, and frankly, all the profs trying to teach pop culture are way too old for it.

it's nice to have a change of pace with an article that does not focus on either grade deflation or feminist issues.

I agree with River. Learn about pop culture on your own time, a Princeton class should be about addressing serious topics, not fluff. Why a Bruce Springsteen song is essential to a discussion of crime and punishment in modern America– a subject worthy of a whole course in its own right– is beyond me.

I disagree. If you read the entire article you'll see they don't spend class talking about a song. Popular culture provides a lens through which one is able to view societal movements and tensions. For example, the writer mentions the class where the cop and the guy from the hood both came in to speak.

Furthermore, no one is forcing you to take that class. If you're more concerned with flaubert or whoever take a different class. Obviously some pretty insightful people think that these classes are worthwhile otherwise leading institutions such as Princeton and Harvard would not offer them.

What's with the weird capitalization in the headline? It's really bothering me.

    Seriously?!

I have nothing against studying pop culture in an academic context, but each time I think about the inclusion of Twilight on the reading list for an English class, I throw up a little in my mouth.

Also, hilariously, my security word is 'throat.'
