Leaning forward on his hands with a huge grin on his face, African-American studies professor Cornel West GS ’80 appears on the cover of his new book, “Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud,” as he frequently does around campus ...(back to the article)

Cornel West is an awesome, awesome human being.
He is by far the most precious intellectual asset that Princeton has on its faculty currently.
has he read all or at least most of the books in his office, because otherwise the setup just seems really pretentious.
Brother West pretentious? Why who could say such a thing!
Virtually every professor in humanities has a similar collection of books on the shelves of his/her office. It goes with the territory. They are well read, and have to keep up with what others are publishing. And success comes with its own challenges, as friends, publishers, and well wisher send them books. One suspects that a few of the books have not been read by Prof. West (yet) but more than 95% have. And the really frightening thing is he probably could offer exceedingly thoughtful commentary on any of those, even those read years ago. He is so gifted intellectually, that he is frigthening.
umm, i was a history major and I don't ever remember seeing profs in my dept (even leaders in their field like Haldon and Grafton) with that many books in their office even though it is kind of their job to read a lot. Again, it is wonderful and very impressive if he is that well read, but the intellectual vibe he tries to give off kind of seems a bit over the top and forced.
From a Parent: Professor West is a national monument and should be officially so designated and put in the National Trust for Historic Preservation. His compelling classes have deeply influenced his studenta and inspired their parents.
Praise the Lord! Another ghost-written book by Princeton's favorite "public intellectual!"
I'm glad to hear WEB's assurance that the professor has read "more than 95%" of the books gracing his "setup."
For a hilarious profile of Brother West, see current Atlantic writer Ross Douthat's column in the Harvard Crimson, completed just as the great man was preparing to depart for Princeton, where he has since, of course, become a glittering star in the local firmament:

West belongs in the hall of shame of phony intellectuals. He's so impressed with himself. The laughable element, of course, is that thousands buy his crap. A modern day Elmer Gantry.
It seems like he writes as many books about himself as he does about other subjects...am I wrong?
