I understand that Paxson was the lead candidate from the get-go and that she is highly respected from inside the Wu. Appointing a health care expert says two things: 1-Slaughter did a great job of resurrecting the international faculty and 2- health care is a top priority in the Obama administration. It would be interesting to get a general profile of the candidates, however. A national security focused academic leader might have been a good choice as well.
Another predictable addition to Tilghman's expanding feminocracy.
great article, thanks for all the info on her. She sounds great!
Let the "feminocracy" reign supreme.
Yea, kind of like H. Vincent Poor after Marie Klawe
Sorry "Ten", that was for "'06"
What a fantastic choice! Dr. Paxson brings a strong background in interdisciplinary integration and fundamental social scientific research to the job; I look forward to this disposition filtering through to budgeting and curriculum decisions.
@ @Ten -- Oh goody for you. You named the one. Here's a cookie.
Everybody's favorite Poor replacing "what's engineering" Klawe was a no-brainer, but a good move. I don't fault the apparent "feminocracy" because that's the trend of all academia. Deal with it and stop complaining '06.
Good pick. Should be some different developmental priorities, and I hope Woody Woo only gets better.
What about Stan Allen in 2002 (same year as Klawe)? Architecture was certainly riper for a woman than Engineering was.
Could the Office of Communications have picked a photo of her in which she didn't appear to be sneering?
I can't believe the appointment of women in academia is tagged "feminocracy" or any other pejorative. There are so many men, and always have been. Women are always fighting to be seen and heard, let alone getting jobs that they deserve. If women ever reach even half the dominance in academia that men have, it would be a miracle.
