Spurred by student concerns, the USG has revised its referendum, which initially proposed that the fall USG Lawnparties budget be donated to Annual Giving.

The revised referendum poses two questions. The first asks students whether they would like to reallocate ...

This new referendum is absurd. I was going to support the old one, but now with this chaotic mix of choices, I am not so sure. Way to show some leadership, Connor...

It's great that Connor is now offering more choices, but unfortunately I think all the amended referendum will do is turn more people against it. Some people may want the Lawnparties money to go to AG but not service groups, or vice versa...with these options, the student body will likely just take the safe route and stick with the Lawnparties concert. And it may just be better that way, for student body morale...

Now this is just silly. There's going to be broad support for killing study breaks and maybe support for killing lawnparties.

Connor realized the referendum was going to fail as it was and now he's trying to salvage it by offering a 20k cut to study breaks nobody attends.

    weak weak weak

“Losing $20,000 out of the fall budget will be a real challenge for the USG but we are more than willing to make that sacrifice if that is what the students want.”

It's not so much that we WANT to get rid of those study breaks and giveaways as much as we'd RATHER get rid of those instead of losing lawnparties. If we end up getting rid of everything, I'm going to be pretty steamed.

Why do we keep $7,000 of the study break money? If we're going for half-measures, I'd rather we spend all the study break money and leave a little for lawnparties, instead of vice versa.

Speaking from a service perspective, the Student Volunteers Council definitely needs money to continue doing the work it does. Pace Center budget is being cut and the wasting endowment that allowed SVC to provide transportation to service sites will run out within two years. The 2009 SVC Board is being very responsible about taking a critical look at what programs will stay and what programs must be cut to remain fiscally viable, but $20,000 or $60,000 will definitely go a long way in helping Princeton students maintain a commitment to service.

Why can't we just spend half of the lawn parties money on lawn parties and then the rest on the other things? Why ruin tradition altogether when you can just make it slightly less grand?

I have a feeling that this is just the USG's way of saying "we don't have anyone good to perform for lawn parties, so let's just pretend that it's because we care about the economy and cancel the whole thing." I mean seriously, if they haven't booked a group by now, then what are the chances of it being any good, and if they have, then I'd assume they'd need to have signed a contract with an artist already. Lawn parties is next week, how can they be making these decisions so late?

I am struck by the continual reference to one person "Connor" making the decisions and being responsible for what does or doesn't happen in terms of USG. Isn't this a representative "Board" of students who have the opportunity to propose, challenge and discuss issues whereupon they have the right and responsibility to vote as they see fit. It seems that many are putting too much power and responsibility in the hands of one person. If that is, indeed, the way USG is run then someone really should look into that and do something to change the way the organization operates. Connor has only been in office a few months so he would not have had enough time to mold USG to his liking. This would have to be an established way of operating and making decisions if it is even true...... Or perhaps it may simply be a case of "sour grapes" at play....I dunno.....I'm just askin'.
