Israeli Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch lectured about the importance of protecting human rights in an age of terror to a packed Dodds Auditorium on Thursday evening. An overflow crowd was able to view the lecture via simulcast in McCosh ...(back to the article)

I'd like to see Palestinian Leader Talks Human Rights:
Oh yeah, they are too busy placing human shields in front of their terrorist bases
Hahaha...hahaaha...an Israeli govt. employee talking about human rights...funny stuff. Let me guess, we'll have Zimbabwe president Mugabe come talk about monetary policy and freedom of the press.
Beinisch says that "Israel is constantly struggling with the balance between ensuring security and protecting human rights..." Is this what they have been doing in Gaza? Is this the reason Gaza has been transformed into an enormous 'concenration camp'? Is this an explanation of violent policies and the continueing illegal occupation and confiscation of the lands of Palestine?
Why is it the priority of the judiciary to insure security first over human rights? Shouldn't security be the responsibility of other government branches, as in other democracies? This speaks volumes about Israel's inability to turn the corner.
And I am in no way excusing the wretched behavior of Palestinian leaders when I say this.
Oh geez this comment thread is hilarious. I am a staunch liberal who worked for Obama this summer, and Christian at that. There needn't be anymore pointless back and forth as no one can defend the fact that, as one of my professors in seminar loudly proclaimed last semester, ISRAEL IS THE ONLY DEMOCRACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Done.
I am pro-Palestinian rights and my mother is Egyptian. Yet, it is hard to speak of "concentration camp" when the Palestinians in Gaza were not forced there by Israel. They have been denied admittance to all other Arab nations where they could easily go just to martyr them.
We should be more proud of our culture and heritage and as Western Arabs living, as '10 said, in a democracy, not take the Al Jazeera propoganda sitting down, or it will be like the boy who cried wolf. If you actually tear yourself away from your studies for one moment, you will see that Israel offered all civilians a safe place to live, and to leave, and their own government refused.
If you want to speak more about this, there are many associations of muslim students ( I do no want to promote just one) and we should defend not radical islam but our own, very difference, peaceful western islam
Perhaps some of you should read some Israeli supreme court decisions before running your mouths...although the level of ignorance here is astounding. As probably the only person on the forum to have actually visited a concentration camp, I find your comparisons insulting. Is Gaza completely surrounded by Israel? Does Israel put the Palestinians to work in hard labor? Does Israel systematically try to kill off all Palestinians? Is this policy racial in origin? If you answer yes to any of these, I encourage to take a look at the facts. yes, Gaza is not a pleasant place right now. However, Hamas was democratically elected by a population fully aware of Hamas' history of violent attacks and intention to continue them. If you truly believe in democracy, then you should believe that the people of Gaza at least bear some of the responsibility for the rocket attacks. To argue that Hamas had no control over them is false - look at the trend in rockets now. Clearly, when it wants to, Hamas is able to hold them at bay. You argue that Israel should be letting aid into Gaza, ignoring the fact that it already does. Why should Israel let any type of food item into Gaza? Israel is concerned about preserving human life, not necessarily returning to it to the status quo. If people have a problem with Israel's aid policies, they should try and get it in through Egypt - I think you will find the Egyptians to be just as skeptical as Israel.
when I say "any type of food item", I mean items like olives and dates, not flour and water, which would be considered the basic foods. I do not mean to suggest that Israel should be barring all food from going in.
@straight dope:
The World Food Bank had announced that the aid from Israel was actually MORE THAN sufficient and that Israel was giving so much food that there were no more storehouses to store it in. Several days after this announcement, all of the food was taken away by Hamas officials in order to send a LIE, propoganda message and deny that Israel has sent aid to their people.
The enemy of the Palestinians is their own government, not Israel. More and more palestinians, hopefully, will begin to see this
@'10: democracy doesn't equal good. bush lead a democracy, and has the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent iraqis and afghanis on his hands
@straight dope:
"As probably the only person on the forum to have actually visited a concentration camp"
false
"Is Gaza completely surrounded by Israel?"
technically no, but in reality sort of: on land on one side, sea blockade on the other, and egyptian proxy through rafah. mubarak is in power because he bends over for the US. and we all know the next step in the connection...
"Does Israel put the Palestinians to work in hard labor?"
no, instead it just kills innocent civilians walking in the streets. see the recent genocide in gaza
"Does Israel systematically try to kill off all Palestinians?"
no, a few it leaves in peace, a few more it tortures, and a few more it kills. but you can ignore the latter and stay in your crack dream of daises and rainbows
"Is this policy racial in origin?"
so you admit a policy exists? in any case, you'd do well to become familiar with the name avigdor lieberman and yisrael beiteinu
@ "@straight dope":
oh my GOD they're so GENEROUS in giving food aid. oh but wait... they wouldn't NEED food aid if they weren't being bombed to oblivion. funny how it works: we'll bomb you and kill your innocents, but then we'll ship in food to seem like fine gentlemen
honestly, i'm neither pro-israeli nor pro-palestinian, i just get frustrated when idiots assume one position and ignore the failures and racist ideologies of the other side. BOTH SIDES HAVE ISSUES. stop trying to make it into angels vs. devils.
and grow up.
