Four-year colleges act as safety net for late upperclass draw times, students say
Published: Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
Upperclassmen had the opportunity to draw into all three of the planned four-year residential colleges, including the new Butler College, for the first time this year. Several students who entered residential college draws said they did so to ensure that ...(back to the article)

the residential colleges are misguided and confused attempts at social engineering... not a bad article
Residential colleges = the future social life of Princeton.
Enjoy folks!
Oh please, until the residential colleges have unlimited free beer they are not going to make a dent in the social life at Princeton. And if they have unlimited free beer, then what's the problem anyway?
Confirming what we already know....that all this supposed "interest" in the residential college system is merely interest in good rooms. If upperclass housing was of the same quality of that in the residential colleges I guarantee that interest in the 4 year colleges would decline very, very sharply.
My roommate and I drew into the residential college system for precisely this reason as well.
In point of fact, though, if you paid a bit of attention to the number of senior and junior zone slots available during draw, you'd see that in all likelihood the draw was a big failure compared to last year for the senior class. *Many* fewer seniors, and fewer juniors, drew into the residential colleges.
Does anyone know why most of Little was unavailable for upper class draw this year? Did it go to Mathey or to the independents?
I'm not gonna lie, as a rising junior with a really crappy (upperclassman) draw time, I sort of regret not applying for a rescollege draw. I agree with OG'12. Renovate most of the existing upperclassman dorms (especially those in the slums), and the rescolleges will likely decline in popularity.
@ curious: The slots in Little went to Mathey
@ P'11: keep in mind that part of the reason many more slots are available after the draw is that there are many more residential college rooms available this year, especially with the building of New Butler.
I was in the top 40% in upperclass junior draw and had below average luck in Mathey draw, but still managed to get a better room in Mathey. The Mathey quad after mine gave up a pretty nice draw time (middle of day 1) in upperclass...I think that speaks to the disparity between the draws, and I don't think it's exactly fair to punish people who either join a club, can't get independent housing, or just don't want to buy a meal plan through the housing system.
That said, if they increased independent housing and increased the number of club shared plans, the situation wouldn't be so bad because people would have more freedom to pick their circumstances. I don't mind seeing a few freshmen once in a while, and certainly don't mind the virtually unlimited amount of food I get in a shared plan and the nice room I ended up getting.
That said, anyone who thinks that the residential college system actually fosters inter-class communication doesn't have half an idea that even the current sophomores don't talk with the current freshmen down the hall, and vice versa.
Since when has this administration had half a realistic idea about anything? All their ideas spring into being full-formed, with no room for student input, and are uniformly horrible.
yea lol i live in a hall with freshmen thru seniors and we basically never say more than hi to each other.
@soph: the admins know if they renovated the slums and stuff itd be the death of their scheme to put upperclassmen in res colleges so ykno theyre gonna put that off as long as possible and like w this 30% decrease in our endowment they have a plausible excuse.
that being said, i kinda regret not trying for res coll draw as a safety net. and im really pissed that mathey took a few of those 700+ sf quads in little. i dont care if we got cuyler back, cuyler isnt anything special.
