If past is prologue, can’t we just keep it there? I love our history and traditions as much as the next Princetonian, but my affections are not so strong as to support the flaws of the past at the ...(back to the article)

"But what is good about the residential college system is both incidental and maintainable even without a residential college umbrella." DINGDINGDINGDING. I always come back to the sad article last year about the Whitman year-end bash. Harvey Rosen dressed up in a tuxedo waxing ecstatic about residential college community in front of a couple hundred confused students--wish I could have been there.
i wouldnt worry about the middle button of your boxers peter-kate
Great article Peter. I'm not sure I agree with you on gender neutral housing but you make a good case for it. You should be commended for presenting the truth about the residential colleges and I hope we see more from you in this vein in the future.
The criticism of the residential college system is great, but the "conservative" gender-neutral housing argument you present is a bit of a straw man. You're spot on about the residential colleges' absurd, self-congratulatory literature and fanfare.
Wow, I'm really surprised and saddened to read that the current student population views the college system so negatively. Just a few years ago when I was at Princeton, I thought the system really worked well, with all the sense of community and camaraderie that you guys seem to mock now. Perhaps these feelings only exist at Forbes?
In any case, as an alumnus, I'm disappointed that the University seems to be going in the wrong direction on this one. Please continue to lobby the administration and the alumni to help get what you guys think is best.
You are correct that the system is flawed but not for the right reasons. Gender neutral housing would be a massive failure. Girlfriends and boyfriends would be living together and have incredibly awkward times once they have broken up. It is a shame our system cant be more similar to Yale. At Yale people are close with the people in their colleges. They have better housing options with bigger rooms and less people, and most of all, they have an area where most freshmen live and kids are allowed to have parties and meet new people. When people try to have parties in Princeton's residential colleges Public Safety shows up before 11. The flaws are numerous and Princeton has never indicated any willingness to change the system. It seems like it is about time Princeton hired someone from outside the school. Yale or Rice maybe? Some place where this system works has to come in and fix the numerous problems
