B-level musical, A-level performers

    This year, Princeton University Players, Princeton's student-run musical theater group, is opening its season with "Tick, Tick ... BOOM!" an autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who wrote the acclaimed musical "Rent."

    I just want to point out that, bad as the script for Tick Tick Boom may be, NOTHING is as bad as Rent.

    If by "beautiful," you mean, "so poorly written it is impossible to discern why anyone at all would like it," then you are correct. The plot is hazy, the dramatic construction is shoddy, the characters are wildly unrealistic at best, and the lyrics are simply terrible. For a musical dealing with the reality of AIDS that doesn't suck, see William Finn and James Lapine's 'Falsettos.'
