The culture wars are raging, and now Princeton has been implicated in them. As the fallout from the Princeton University Band's (PUB) clash with Citadel cadets last weekend further attests, "The War between the States" did not end with ...(back to the article)

A fifth category of responses: pro princeton, but anti princeton's band.
"...North and South, religious and secular, ivory tower and military bastion..." Waaah...What? religious and secular? Explain to me how a scrap between the cadets of the Citadel and the PUB is a clash between the "religious and the secular". How entirely absurd.
And by the way, here is another Princetonian who is "pro Princeton, but anti Princeton's band".
And by the way,
i agree with Chatham
I think this is a case of looking at one tiny example and trying to explain some massive phenomenon.
Something tells me that if the band accidentally (or purposefully) marched on the war dead hall at Yale, yalies would probably get upset too.
I am old enough to remember another time I saw this many letters insulting Princeton's marching band. In 1981, our team played at the University of Delaware and were thrashed 61-8. Alums wrote in to say what a disgrace the BAND was. What a joke. Transference anyone?
P'89
It seems to me that the Princeton Band traveled a very long way to support the football team last weekend -- something very few other Princetonians can claim. Every fall weekend, the Band is out there -- in good weather or in bad -- when the team wins and when it loses -- in SUPPORT of the school and the football team. In winter, they support the hockey and basketball teams. I've seen them at soccer games, lacrosse games, and baseball games. I've seen them at women's team games and men's team games. I've seen them support Princeton's teams when school was in session and when it wasn't. I've seen them work their tails off at reunions year after year. I've seen them play for faculty and staff functions. It would be nice if the student body and administration and alumni supported the Band even HALF as much as the Band supports Princeton.
I am a student athlete who thinks the band is great -- unpretentious, enthusiastic, and usually funny -- and always a welcome presence at any of my games and my friends' games. Lighten up. They are not just entertainers, they are also our fellow students -- young men and women who are as proud of Princeton as anyone can be -- and they show it loudly and proudly. They show up. They show support.
Go Band! I can't wait to see you next week!
Chatham: "Explain to me how a scrap between the cadets of the Citadel and the PUB is a clash between the 'religious and the secular'. How entirely absurd."
If you don't think religion played a role in shaping how the Cadets feel about homosexuality, then it's clear that someone's engaging in "entirely absurd" reasoning. But it isn't Jou.
Out of context, p'89. Critiques of the PUB in the last couple of days have focused almost exclusively on its behavior at the Citadel, not on the extent of its support of Princeton athletics.
While its enthusiastic devotion ot Princeton games is praiseworthy etc., etc., Princetonians are perfectly justified, in light of recent events, in voicing a critical opinion of the PUB conduct, both here and abroad without being accused of condemning every single aspect (members, musical talent, dedication, etc.) of the PUB.
to PrincetonTigerProud. Aren't some of the band members alumni? So not all are students at Princeton. Does the band really support the athletics at Princeton or is it just a reason for the band to go and make fun of other people?
this fight had nothing to do with social differences, the north v the south, or religious intolerance. I can assure you that no words were exchanged about anyone's stance on homosexuality. the fight started because the princeton band walked onto the avenue of remembrance, a memorial to all those who have fallen in service of this country, and began flipping off cadets for no reason. how do i know this? i was there.
