Band was inflamatory and not very good

Regarding "University band harassed by cadets at Citadel," (Monday, Sept. 22, 2008):

You really don't believe the Citadel corp attacked your band for no reason at all, do you? Yes, your band ...

Since when does "breaking ranks" or mistakenly walking down an area of a foreign campus that happens to have a memorial dedication make it OK for the Citadel corp to PHYSICALLY ATTACK the band? Any civilized, intelligent, decent human being knows that physical violence is that fault of the attacker, not the victim. The band certainly did not provoke bullying.

    Mr. Patton,
I am uncertain as to why you have written to our campus newspaper. Certainly, the obvious "There are two sides to every story" would have sufficed, but your letter just seems superfluous. Perhaps the Citadel newspaper, the home paper of the attackers, should also watch their biased reporting.

And last, Ms. Wynter, the Band performs comical, satirical material at Princeton and campuses around the nation and, while some may roll their eyes at the content, they have never been PHYSICALLY BEATEN. Is the victim of a rape "just asking for it" by wearing promiscuous clothing? This is 2008----only the KKK deals with being offended by ganging up against a group of innocent kids.

This batch of letters to the editors is one of the most insane things I've read in my life, but judging from all of my friends' guffaws in the common room upon reading them, I think the entire campus knows as much. I am not in the Band, but know that they are good kids who volunteer their time to make the relatively lame sports teams have exciting games. I know I'll be cheering loudly at their next performance.

Citadel is leagues below USMA and USNA

These Citadel people are unhinged. Nobody at USMA or USNA would have acted this way. They seem to be on the path of Tom Berenger in Platoon. May the Willem Defoes triumph.

    too bad

Our ban is the biggest joke in the world. If they behaved at all like they do on Princeton's campus, they deserved it.

    barking up the wrong tree

A previous post defending the band states: "the Band performs comical, satirical material at Princeton and campuses around the nation and, while some may roll their eyes at the content, they have never been PHYSICALLY BEATEN." I agree that no actions by the band warranted any physical altercation BUT that should not get them off the hook scott free. It is hypocritical for a "liberal" band to critique the "conservative" values of a school by being lewd and humping each other (by all accounts) while on the Citadel campus. Such actions are offensive not only for their context at a family event but for their debasing of homosexuality. Thus far everyone has been offended by the yelling of "faggot" by Citadel fans. But there has been little criticism of the band's actions beyond "inappropriate." For the band to claim tolerance and then demonstrate sexual acts on the field "as comical, satirical material" for the sake of entertainment, is flat out hypocritical. You can't hold the banner of "defending liberalism" and then accidentally use the word "gay" to mean "lame" or "annoying." In the end, the band's actions in the field are as offensive and disrespectful to LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES ALIKE as the shouts from Citadel students. For the future: the best comedy comes from the ability to laugh at one's self, think Charlie Chaplin, not Howard Stern.

    Citadel Graduate

Don't be so certain. I have many friends who are USMA graduates and am quite familiar with the culture at West Point and other military schools. I believe it is quite possible that a small number of cadets at West Point might have crossed over the line into assault and woodwind murder, just as a small number of Citadel cadets crossed that line.
