I should have put my post in quotes: it's a section of the partial birth abortion ban itself, and it represents the findings of Congress, not my opinion. http://news.lp.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/abortion/2003s3.html

Sorry, PU10, but your claim that late-term abortions have been banned by 27 states as well as the US Congress out of a concern for women's health is laughably naive or grossly misinformed. Late-term abortions are, and always have been, incredibly rare in this country, but anti-choice zealots needed a political football to rally their base, so they manufactured a great deal of outrage over a procedure that is occasionally medically necessary and very infrequently performed. In other words, they created a good deal of smoke where there was no fire simply so they could claim to have extinguished a mighty blaze.

Rather than being an abortion procedure that is embraced by the medical community, particularly among physicians who routinely perform other abortion procedures, partial-birth abortion remains a disfavored procedure that is not only unnecessary to preserve the health of the mother, but in fact poses serious risks to the long-term health of women and in some circumstances, their lives. As a result, at least 27 States banned the procedure as did the United States Congress which voted to ban the procedure during the 104th, 105th, and 106th Congresses.

Complications from a less safe procedure can be serious or fatal. I am not a physician, but the people who wrote and voted on this are: http://www.acog.org/from_home/publications/press_releases/nr04-18-07.cfm

Sara, please list for me the medical conditions that partial birth abortion prevents or cures. The baby is almost completely delivered in partial-birth abortion. Do you mean to say that killing the baby before its head is delivered has curative properties for women?! You can't be serious.
