Editor's note appended
A lengthy debate erupted at yesterday’s USG meeting over a petition to put a referendum on the ballot for the upcoming election. The referendum would ask students to assess their views regarding the current University administration ...(back to the article)

Dunne doesn't really give any substantial reasons for calling the referendum "poorly worded" or "sophomoric"; it looks like he's just blowing hot air. The questions look pretty straightforward. Plus, why is Dunne, a relatively popular administrator, but not necessarily one calling the shots on big policies, serving as the admin's attack dog here? Do you think people would take Malkiel as seriously if she came to the USG meeting and said the same things?
Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!
It would be sooooo terrible for the USG to endanger their buddy-buddy relationship with the Administration by actually having to advocate on behalf of their constituents. What a bunch of spineless bureaucrats.

'The petition “assumes this is the only way students can conduct concerns,” [Dunne] added.' Please, Dean Dunne, please tell us other methods in which we can conduct our concerns that will yield effective results. I seem to remember the administration being particularly receptive to student input on grade deflation and the annexing of upperclass/independent housing, to name a couple. Your wisdom amazes me, sir. I find your opposition to this referendum and to relevent student input quite sophomoric.

Personally, while I might have chosen different questions to ask, especially more specific ones, I think that this survey is overall a very good idea. Kyle and I have had some differences, especially relating to the whole McCosh-STD thing, but this question is in no way out of bounds, and the fact that the University seems to be so scared of the answers to some pretty direct questions speaks volumes to me.

On first blush I don't really see why the wording of the petition is "sophmoric". It's a petition, so almost by nature it's sophmoric, but I believe some data could be culled from it. Whether that data is useful depends on if the administration would care about the answers. Unless the answers upset the Trustees, I don't believe they will.
Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!
The USG is afraid the administration might get upset with them. God forbid that the USG actually have to fight for something and perhaps tarnish the little gold stickers they get to put on their resumes...
Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!
why does the usg think that student opinion is frivolous?
Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!
The USG better not drop the ball here. The administration has sucked on all things from housing and RCAs to grade deflation and UHS. They need to know how much we disapprove.

There is a link to the petition.

This is shoddy reporting. Would the reporter mind telling us what the exact wording of the petition is? It seems that a lot of the quotes are referring to it.
