Its a self-selection process. Those who do not find the eating club concept appealing are less likely to apply, and less likely to matriculate if admitted. The University has a number or surveys and studies that clearly show this is the case. Many desirable applicant or admits are lost to elite competitors because of the anachronistic eating club social structure.

As a student here, I can say that the eating clubs are one of the few things I deeply value about my time here. The close friendships formed and genuine independence they contribute to student life cannot be replicated by anything else nearly as well, and my associated experiences and discussions have taught me more than any famous professor ever could.

Many pre-frosh come to Princeton Preview, and indeed choose not to go to Princeton, not based on any realistic picture of the eating clubs, but based on stereotypes. To let them see the eating clubs in action might actually help.

Lets be honest: the eating clubs, more than any other factor, cost Princeton cross-admits to Harvard, Yale, Stanford and MIT. The Administration is struggling, with some success, to reduce their outsized impact on social life at Princeton.
