Freshman forward Kevin Lohry and the men’s hockey team recently enjoyed the nonpareil experience of winning the ECAC championship.
Q: Your ‘Welcome-to-college-sports’ moment?

A: In terms of being on a college team, moving and storage at the beginning of the year, which was a fantastic week — there’s a lot of sarcasm involved in that — it was hard and back-breaking, but it was good getting to know all of the boys. As far as hockey, my first point because I was like, “Hey, I can do it in this league.”

Q: Greatest highlight in sports?

A: I feel like highlights are more important the higher level you play at, so since this is the highest level I’ve ever played, I’d say last weekend [when Princeton won the ECAC Championship] was pretty important.

Q: Funniest story about coach?

A: Last week because we had team pictures and [assistant coach Matt] Lindsay is bald, and I always joke around with him privately, but I forgot we were in front of the entire team, and I asked him if he put a little extra wax on his dome, and then everyone kinda laughed at him, so I felt a little bad about that.

Q: Quirkiest teammate? Why?

A: Lando [senior forward Landis Stankievech] because he’s a Rhodes Scholar, and I never have any idea what’s going on in his head.

Q: Funniest teammate?

A: They’ve all got their different degrees of funny. Willy [junior forward Brett Wilson] is funny ’cause you can’t say anything without him making fun of you — he’s not afraid of making anyone feel bad. Prids [senior forward Erik Pridham] makes me laugh because his laugh is hilarious.

Q: Your favorite thing to do when not practicing?

A: If I had my golf clubs here, I’d go golfing. If I had my racket, I’d play tennis. Mostly we watch TV, we conversate — also a lot of FIFA 08 and Madden 08.

Q: Did you have any sports idols growing up?

A: Right now, [Liverpool striker] Steven Gerrard — he’s a god. Probably the most amazing athlete, close behind Michael Jordan — how can you not like Michael Jordan?

Q: Who gets the most guys/girls on the team? Who has the most game off the ice?

A: Gody [freshman defenseman Matt Godlewski], easily. Holy crap — everyone wants him. Ladies love Godlewski, he’s LL Cool G. He wears sweatpants and flannel and a backwards hat, and for some reason, women love it.

Q: If you were a coach for a day, you would…?

A: I found out we have to take a day off every week [due to NCAA regulations], but if I could get around that, I’d have us skate everyday. Other than that, we play hard-nosed hockey really well, but I might emphasize puck movement a little more — I think we could be a little more creative.

Q: Teammate you’re most glad isn’t playing for the other team?

A: Probably [senior defenseman and captain Mike] Moore. He’s probably the best hitter I’ve ever seen — I don’t understand how he does it. There’s an art to hitting, and it’s hard, and he does it. I’d probably never go over the middle of the ice against him.

Q: Dream job after graduation?

A: A caddy, at least after I’ve finished out my playing days. Then I’d want to be a coach or GM. I could probably do it this year, actually.

Q: Pre-game ritual?

A: Oh god, you’re talking to the wrong guy. I’m probably the worst on the team. What I’m doing now [on Monday] is affecting this weekend’s game [on Saturday]. I think I have a mental disease.

Q: Favorite pump-up song?

A: When I’m tying my skates, I have to listen to a song called “Standing Still” by Sunrise, but I can’t listen to any song two times in a row, so I usually start with the song before it so it leads into it. I have to finish tying the skates before the song ends, otherwise we’re gonna do bad.

Q: What are you most looking forward to after the season ends?

A: Next season.
