A friend of mine (a UCLA graduate), who is now retired, travels the world making these types of loans. Most are under $200 and they have NEVER had aa bad loan. The numbers of people gaining work has been unbelieveable.
He pays his own way and uses World Vision money for the loans. Very, very effective way to improve the lives of many for very little.

If you want to promote student interest, the first thing that you should probably do is include, somewhere in this article, how someone could become a part of this club. I'm sure there are a lot of Princeton students who would be interested in a project like this, but who might not know Becky or Ankit and might not necessarily take the initiative to send either one of them an unprecedented email.
Other things to think about - how big is the club? What are its goals over a realistic timeline? How will the club ensure that its money is needed by the individuals to whom it lends?
Basically, this article should do a little more than let people know that a new club has been formed.

There is also an organization that makes microloans in the U.S. They focus on serving immigrants, minorities and women. They've been operating in the U.S since the 90's as an offshoot of the work their parent organization began in Latin America in the 60's. They, too, experience the repayment rates in the 95% level. ACCION USA. Check them out at www.accionusa.org. Some of the stories are pretty amazing.
