"A DORMITORY FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION WAS CONDUCTED IN YOUR ROOM TODAY, AND AN UNAUTHORIZED HEAT PRODUCING APPLIANCE WAS DISCOVERED. THIS APPLIANCE (HOT POT) WAS CONFISCATED. YOU WILL RECEIVE AN E-MAIL FROM THE CHIEF FIRE INSPECTOR LATER IN THE WEEK."

right, if by looking out for your safety you mean having fire inspections to keep the cost of princeton's fire insurance costs down

I have always wondered: If I were to place an Exit Sign on my door, would that violate the clause of the fire code that says nothing can be put on a door because it can obscure the exit from the edifice during an emergency?

This is the only really funny thing I have ever read in the Prince. Seriously. Wait until you get your "hot pot" back. They tape that flip-lid when it is confiscated with bad-ass fire safety warning tape to control that power within. I was crushed too about a year ago when the same happened to me. But boy was that voodoo curse on target.

A wonderfully well written article with great humor although it is ruined by the immature use of the inspector's email address. It does somewhat attempt to distract the reader from the true issues - fire safety really is important and while it may be an occasional inconvenience, we'll all benefit in the end. Also, I know that Kenpaul didn't make these standards up - he is just doing his job by enforcing regulations.

this was a hilarious article! thanks for the early morning laugh! as to the person named "personal responsibility", a teapot is very different from a grill or candle or cigarette. the "risk" is nowhere near the other materials you mentioned. teapots really should be allowed when you consider the heat given off by the heaters in dorm rooms, which heat the metal parts of the heater to temperatures that will burn you. also, lighten up.

OK, so it is your right to place everyone else around you at risk so you can sip your tea, is that what you are saying? You now have more responsibility than just your own well-being - that of everyone else in your dorm. You may think it's a small thing, but I'll bet every student that has been severely burned or died in a fire didn't plan on it and never thought, "this candle will kill (Southern Adventist University)" or "this cigarette isn't dangerous (many, many schools)" or "I'm not going to fall asleep while using my George Foreman Grill (George Washington University)" or "I'm just lighting this poster as a prank." The last one killed three students at Seton Hall University in 2000. That fire is the reason there are sprinklers over your head.

nice... so fire inspectors are bastards, neanderthals, etc.? why don't you just use the hot water tap like everyone else? the poor judgment that led you to this column is pretty good evidence that you shouldn't be trusted with a teapot.
