and what about the semi independent kids in butler and wilson who get crap dorms and few kitchen options. please tell me how its fair that the kids who live in whitman, the newest and arguably nicest underclassman dorm get to appropriate some of the better upperclassmen housing as well?

According to Lisa Depaul and Angie Hodgeman this was "an idea brought up by students during a series of town hall meetings held last year in anticipation of the launch of the four-year college program. The idea was discussed at these meetings, and the determination was made that implementation would be considered for next year's draw." If administrators have been mulling this decision since meetings held last year why was there no further discussion in the last year? I beleive that Housing is responsive to student input and does a good job of outreach about room draw and other housing concerns. However, they and other administrators could have let students know sometime in the last year that this could be implemented. Instead, student input is only solicited after the fact.

I agree with the previous poster. I would add that communal kitchens are absolutely NOT an acceptable substitute for one's own kitchen facilities. Communal kitchens are frequently crowded, not kept clean by those who use them, and any food you keep in them runs the risk of being swiped by a hungry late-night snacker. Administrators who think independent students can (or would want to) feed themselves by using communal kitchens are deluding themselves.

This is still ridiculous. A student who wants to enjoy the benefits of a four-year college and be partially independent could draw a room IN Whitman that is near one of the MANY kitchens in the actual college. If the real issue is that there is not enough space in Whitman period, then there are other dorms which would be just as suitable. A fully independent student should be guaranteed housing with a kitchen over a student who MAY be partially independent. Moreover, any junior and senior in Whitman could draw into Spelman as long as they are high on the draw list, meaning they don't even necessarily have to be partially independent. In fact, they could be in Whitman, an eating club, and have all the amenities that Spelman offers. Please tell me how THAT is fair.
