Mr. Crane seems to espouse the same elitist snobbery that the university
should be trying to rid itself of. As stated in the article:
The first recruitment process will only be open to members of the Class of 2011, Crane said, citing a number of concerns about taking members from older classes. “The pool we would be drawing from if we accepted juniors and seniors would be people who aren’t in clubs, either because they didn’t initially express interest in joining a club or tried but did not get in, and we don’t know if those are the type we would want to take,” Crane said.
damn straight you don't want to admit hosees. Give me a break that's what caused Campus club to go defunct. It was all those who couldn't get into a good club.
El Jefe's view suggests two possibilities: (1)that hosees wouldn't be dedicated club members (unsubstantiated and implausible) or (2)that a club with a large amount of hosees makes a club "less attractive" to would be members (also implausible, given that many sign-in clubs contain hosees and still maintain a vibrant membership). But even if one were to grant this second view, it wouldn't apply to Campus anyway. For the historical record, Campus Club
was dominated by members who liked the club atmosphere or "culture" (as you say) and chose it as their first choice (i.e. it didn't have many hosees). In fact, it went defunct not because it was filled with hosees, but because people who were hosed DIDN'T join the club in larger number. El Jefe should at least get the facts straight before he or she continues posting obnoxious opinions.
Well it seems based on all the detail provided about the bicker process that cannon will open bicker. I just want to see all the 60-yr old alumni forcing the sophs to do sex charades. Or do I?
I was hearing about possible Cannon bicker as a freshman. Knock me over with a feather if they are ready to go next spring.
Most likely, it won't just be the original Cannon alums conducting a bicker/snicker/sign-in process. I imagine the DEC alums from the '90s would be involved as well, and happily so. Viva the Moose!
Why I think Crane’s statement about “the type we would want to take” is misguided:
1. Bicker is not an objective measure of how social, cool or sophisticated a person is. Many people are hosed because they are on bad terms with a particular member, are not in a feeder group, got brought up late in discussions or spent the past year abroad.
2. If bicker were an objective judgment of worth, then Cannon wouldn’t have to worry about letting undesirables bicker because they would be easily eliminated from the bicker class during the process.
3. People change in college. Some people go independent and later decide they love the street and wish they were part of an active club.
I'm impressed that the Prince keeps printing this annual rumor, modifying only the year by adding one or two years. I'm even more impressed that people keep believing it :)
This time it is true...
