Beyond re-examining and retracting January's Spelman announcement, the administration ought to consider including rooms with private kitchens into any future dormitory construction or renovation. If integrating independent living with the residential college system is a goal the administration decides to pursue, it should not be accomplished by taking rooms from Spelman. Students who draw into Spelman rooms often do so because they do not want to be part of either the residential college system or the eating clubs. This option must be maintained.

It is frustrating to see the University moving forward with a major shift in student life without any student consultation. Especially since this will continue to isolate independent students as they will be spread out among small kitchens across campus. I do not feel that Whitmanites need more options. At least not at the expense of independent students who depend on kitchens as their main source of food.

As I read the news on the Daily Princetonian website sometimes I can't help but wonder if the university administration in charge of student life on campus acts first and thinks last.. The Spelman decision is the last in a series of such recent actions. I'm thinking the university is not well served by this group of administrators who seem to lack a vision and the ability to think things through before announcing a decision. As a parent I must say I am getting quite frustrated by it all and find it more and more difficult to not get involved. President Tilghman, it may be time for you to evaluate the recent performance of this group of administrators who are not serving you, this institution or your students very well IMHO.

I think this is another case of the U. not taking enough time to listen to students before making a choice that affects their campus lives. Now, tons of students are really nervous about room draw...
