I would like to point out several inaccuracies in this article. While I can appreciate the desire to impart some sort of meaning for the winged design at Princeton by referencing the ears of the Tiger, no such reasoning was ever a part of Crisler's decision to paint the helmets as he did. In 1937, his FINAL year at Princeton, Coach Crisler switched the Tigers to a winged helmet design that belonged not to Princeton, but to the Spalding Sporting Goods Company. The FH5 model helmet was first advertised in the 1937 edition the Official Intercollegiate Football Guide and was available only in tan leather with black wings. The design was purely functional as extra padding for reinforcement and durability. Princeton used this design for only ONE year and when Crisler went to Michigan he ordered the same Spalding helmet and painted them Maize and Blue. Again... there was no correlation between the ears of our Wolverine mascot and the design on the helmet. Very creative embellishment, though. I'll give you that.
I'm not so sure you have your facts straight, Nick.

As your own school explains: "In fact, Crisler had introduced a helmet at Princeton in 1935 that should look remarkably familiar to Wolverine fans"
